An SA Revenue Service (Sars) employee stationed at the Beitbridge border post and two other men have been arrested for trying to get the police to release a truck containing smuggled cigarettes worth R10 million.

Sars official Freddy Lentsoane, 36, is in police custody, while his co-defendants, Christian Laurens Bezuidenhout, 19, and Christian Phillipus Bezuidenhout, 64, are out on bail of R2,000 each. They appeared at the Tshilwavhusiku magistrates court in Polokwane on Tuesday facing charges of corruption and against the purposes of justice.

According to Limpopo police spokesman Col Moatse Ngoepe, the police reacted after seeing a suspicious truck moving at 3am on December 3 on the N1.

“Makhado police were on patrol when they noticed a truck speeding along the N1 road and tried to stop it.

“The driver sped up and the members called for reinforcements from Tshilwavhusiku SAPS. In the process, the police received information from the tracking company about a hijacked truck with the same description that was heading towards the Tshilwavhusiku area, ”he said.
