SANDF Confirms: Army Patrolling Cape Town Streets, Garden Route to Help Enforce Closure Rules

The South African National Defense Force (SANDF) has been deployed to parts of the Western Cape since Tuesday to support local law enforcement at identified hotspots.

In response to a News24 inquiry, SANDF said it had started operating on the Cape Town subway on Tuesday and on the Garden Route on Saturday.

“Areas the deployments have already covered include, but are not limited to, Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Delft, Kraaifontein, Mfuleni, Mitchells Plain, Lentegeur, Samora Machel and Philippi East. Additionally, deployments focused on Disaster Management Act regulations. in relation to the application of the curfew between 21:00 and 06:00, ”said SANDF.

On Wednesday, Police Minister Bheki Cele confirmed that the SANDF had been tied up to help police keep beachgoers off the beaches along the Garden Route in the Western Cape.

The province is also receiving military assistance at its hospitals, having requested military assistance from the military.
