English Premier League leaders Liverpool have fallen short of a home loss to rising Serie A Atalanta with a 2-0 defeat in the fourth round of the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Mohamed Salah returned to Liverpool’s lineup and was back in action after he missed the last 10 days due to testing positive for COVID-19.
Salah missed Egypt’s two African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Togo and was also unable to attend Liverpool’s game against Leicester City.
The first half was fairly uneventful on both sides with the Italian team showing more determination and desire in their approach.
Josip Ilicic scored Atalanta’s first goal in the second half, taking advantage of a crossed cross from Alejandro Gómez to beat Alisson.
The visitors doubled their lead four minutes later when an unmarked Robin Gosens volleyed in after Hans Hateboer’s wink down.
Salah appeared for just 61 minutes and was eliminated by Klopp.
Liverpool remain on top of Group D with nine points after four rounds. Meanwhile, Ajax and Atalanta have the same number of points in the group stage.
