JOHANNESBURG – The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said on Saturday that the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is on the brink of collapse.

This comes as the beleaguered company saw outages at several of its radio stations earlier this week.

The SABC claims that the outage was caused by power outages.

But the union said it was clear that the public broadcaster has no contingency plans to solve the challenges of the transition and its aging infrastructure.

The outage comes after more than 600 employees were laid off at the public broadcaster.

Aubrey Tshabalala from the union said that the interruption of transmission in the implosion of the company was just the tip of an iceberg: “So the public broadcaster now will have to depend on the private sector in the future. So what South Africans should expect now is more requests for bailouts because the current structure will not be sustainable under the current leadership. “
