JOHANNESBURG – The authorities appear to have made some progress in reducing the backlog of hundreds of trucks at the Beitbridge border post.

Travelers seeking to enter Zimbabwe have spent nearly a week in the mail in lines of several kilometers.

At least four truckers have died while waiting at the border, something that is largely attributed to dire conditions, including scorching heat.

SA Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF) spokesperson Lin Botha said on Saturday that the government urgently needed to intervene.

“The delay is only 4.9 kilometers as of this morning for northbound traffic. Unfortunately the southbound traffic that is within Zimbabwe trying to enter South Africa is a bit longer than that. It is in the region of about 20 odd kilometers because there are two roads that lead to Zimbabwe-Beitbridge, ”he said.
