JOHANNESBURG – The South African Airways (Saapa) Pilots Association is reviewing a Labor Court ruling that dismissed its attempt to stop a lockout at the national airline.
Two weeks ago, the SAA issued a formal lockout notice, warning that nearly 400 pilots would not be able to access their workplace until they agreed to new terms and conditions of employment.
They went to the Labor Court to challenge it and lost Tuesday night.
Saapa Chairman Grant Back: “We argue that this lockout is an additional abuse of power under corporate bailout provisions and an attempt to scapegoat the SAA status of pilots, exactly what Dudu Myeni attempted doing and a violation of the correct and fair treatment of employees in a company that is under corporate bailout. “
SAA was placed on a corporate bailout more than a year ago and a bailout plan was adopted in July that involves, among other things, massive downsizing.
It also foresees changes in the conditions of service for those who will keep their jobs.
