Johannesburg – The Department of Public Enterprises said on Friday it sympathized with the plight of South African Airways employees who have been unpaid for several months and urged them to be patient as it worked to find a solution.
The financially distressed state airline has been under a corporate bailout since December last year and in October Finance Minister Tito Mboweni allocated R10.5 billion in his medium-term budget policy statement to fund its bailout plan.
On Friday, the public companies department said the key to resolving the difficulties SAA faces was the completion of the business rescue process and that it was working with rescue professionals to find the best restructuring solutions for the airline, including payment. of wages.
He said that in the past he had worked with SAA management to restore good corporate governance and combat corruption at the national airline.
“As one of the key focus areas, SAA has examined the main contracts related to logistics, information technology, transactional advisory services, ground handling and security,” the department said.
He noted that the airline had taken disciplinary action against the employees involved, resulting in the firing of some CEOs and superiors.
Thirteen other employees were found guilty of misconduct and received final written warnings, while nine were fired and another four resigned.
“All stakeholders, employees, and union members are encouraged to come forward and provide credible information to the Department regarding instances of possible corruption, collusion, theft, or fraud that have occurred within the airline and among its service providers,” added the department of public companies. .
