CAPE TOWN – The leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), John Steenhuisen, said that South Africa would be a better place with little or no poverty, if the party had taken power instead of the African National Congress (ANC).
The federal party leader attacked the ruling party while addressing delegates at the DA’s Western Cape Elective Congress, which takes place virtually on Saturday.
The district attorney went ahead with his congress amid murder charges and a murder plot, with several members fighting for positions.
Steenhuisen said South Africa was being repressed and brought down by the “dead weight” of ANC policies.
“That dead weight is our corrupt and incapable national government, bent on centralizing more and more control in the corrupt and incapable state.”
He said that the country for the last 20 years would have been better off under the rule of the national DA, with better infrastructure and little or no unemployment.
“Just think how much faster and further we could have traveled down the road if the DA had been in the national government. Poverty could have been eradicated, having a job could have been a personal choice for the people, not a ‘geluk’ , a matter of luck … informal settlements could have been a thing of the past. “
The DA leader’s speech comes just hours before the party elects a provincial leader, with Transport MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela and spokesman Masizole Nnqasela considered favorites.
The winner will be announced this afternoon.
