JOHANNESBURG – The South African Weather Service warned on Friday that the tropical storm in Mozambique and Madagascar has now intensified to become a tropical cyclone.

The coast of Beira in Mozambique prepares for the arrival of Cyclone Eloise.

It threatens to disrupt one of the country’s key ports and flood thousands of homes.

The weather service has issued a level 9 advisory for the weekend, warning of disruptive rains in the eastern parts of Mpumalanga and parts of Limpopo.

Forecaster Mbavhi Maliage said: “It is expected to be a tropical cyclone from now until tomorrow. So it is expected to moderate and be classified as a terrestrial depression, we hope it will continue to be a terrestrial depression when it begins to affect us on Sunday morning.

Countries like eSwatini and Malawi have also issued warnings for residents to prepare for potential downpours and high winds.
