SA responds to ANC by ‘humiliating’ himself after Zim’s flight

SA has intervened in the ANC by “humiliating” itself after its delegation used an air force plane to fly to Zimbabwe, “ignoring level 2 lockdown regulations.”

The party this week was criticized and accused of abusing state resources after its delegation landed in Zimbabwe last week on a taxpayer-funded flight, for a meeting with Zanu-PF.

The delegation, led by the party’s general secretary, Ace Magashule, met with officials of the ruling Zanu-PF after allegations of human rights violations during the pandemic and the coronavirus lockdown.

TimesLIVE reported that the delegation received a “push” from Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, who had permission to travel to Zimbabwe to meet with his counterpart to discuss defense-related issues in the region after a recent Community of Development of Southern Africa (Sadc).

President Cyril Ramaphosa gave Mapisa-Nqakula 48 hours to compile a report on the incident. In a statement Tuesday, Magashule said they had been wrong to use the state-funded plane and that the ANC would reimburse the government for the trip.

“We travel in an unusual way and profusely humble ourselves where we went wrong during the shutdown and we will reimburse the government for costs incurred on behalf of our delegation,” Magashule said.

He said the delegation was under quarantine in accordance with government regulations to contain the spread of Covid-19.
