SA reports 67 deaths related to Covid-19 as international travel restrictions ease

  • South Africa returns to international travel with a 90% Covid-19 recovery rate.
  • However, on the eve of the lifting of the restrictions, 67 more deaths and another 1,767 cases were reported.
  • Thirty-seven of the deaths occurred in KwaZulu-Natal, where the virus was first confirmed in the country.

South Africa will facilitate international travel on Thursday with a 90% Covid-19 recovery rate.

However, 67 more deaths and 1,767 cases were reported.

Earlier, the government announced that it would curb the spread of the virus as international borders were reopened, everyone traveling to South Africa will need to submit a recent negative test and must have travel insurance.

A list of countries tiered according to risks related to Covid-19 was presented on Wednesday.

“Ordinary” visitors, such as tourists, from those countries will not be allowed.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced three new deaths in the Eastern Cape, 37 in KwaZulu-Natal, 11 in Gauteng, nine in the Western Cape and seven in the Free State.

This brings the number of Covid-19-related deaths to 16,734 out of 674,339 cases. There have been 608 112 recoveries.

Since the last report, 23,426 new tests have been performed.
