JOHANNESBURG – South Africa has recorded more than 2,000 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, representing a week of relatively higher daily increases in infections.

The total number of cases in the country now stands at 749,182.

Earlier this week, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that South Africa will see further easing of lockdown regulations with international borders fully open and restrictions on the sale of alcohol lifted.

With the country registering an average of more than 2,000 new cases this week, health experts warned that the relaxed regulations could lead to a second wave of infections if South Africans let their guard down.

Fifty-three more COVID-19-related deaths were recorded in the last day, bringing the national death toll to 20,206.
