JOHANNESBURG – South Africa has recorded 14,305 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest increase in a single day since the outbreak began.

That has brought the country’s total case burden to more than 968,000

This agonizing milestone comes amid warnings that the country is grappling with a resurgence that appears to be fueled by a new variant of the virus.

There are warnings that the country may rise above the peak of the first wave in the coming days.

Since health systems in regions like the Eastern Cape and some in the Western Cape are already experiencing a notable increase in hospital admissions.

At least 326 more people have succumbed to the virus in the past 24 hours, with more than half of those new deaths recorded in the Eastern Cape.

The additional deaths now put South Africa’s national COVID-19 death toll at 25,983, which is by far the highest number on the continent.
