BRITISH – The cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in South Africa now stands at 657,627 after 2,055 more infections were recorded in the last 24-hour cycle.

On Friday, the Health Department also reported 85 more coronavirus-related deaths in the country.

The total number of deaths since the virus was first detected in South Africa now stands at 15,857.

The recovery rate is now 89.2% after 586,844 people recovered.

Gauteng has the highest death toll with 62 reported deaths. Nine were recorded in KwaZulu-Natal, seven in the Western Cape, five in the Eastern Cape, and two in the Northern Cape.

Also on Friday, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, highlighted the importance of adhering to regulations that aim to curb the spread of the virus.

This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Wednesday that the country will move to Alert Level 1 of the national shutdown, easing many of the restrictions to allow for more economic and social activity.

The relaxation of the regulations takes effect at midnight on Sunday, September 20, 2020.

South Africa is preparing to welcome international travelers from October 1, but Dlamini-Zuma has warned that there would be travel restrictions in countries experiencing increases in the number of COVID-19 infections.

Many countries have reintroduced stricter measures to control a second wave of infections, in most cases more serious.

Earlier this week, the World Health Organization warned that Europe will face a growing number of deaths from the coronavirus during the autumn months, as the number of daily infections worldwide hit a record high.

Israel was among the countries battling a new peak, announcing a three-week shutdown starting Friday, when people will be no more than 500 meters from their homes.
