JOHANNESBURG – For years she has been a shoulder to cry on, adviser and friend to many strangers on social media, magazines and radio, and now, in her time of need, South Africans are collaborating to help Dr. Sindi Van Zyl .
The beloved doctor, who became popular on Twitter for offering medical and non-medical advice, has been admitted to a Johannesburg hospital for more than a month after being infected with COVID-19.
As funds dry up and hospital bills pile up, her husband Marinus Van Zyl has asked those who have been positively impacted by her to offer whatever they can to cover her bills, which currently hover around R2 million.
“The cost to the family … alone has already exceeded one million rand, and we are running out of funds,” Van Zyl said on a fundraising page set up to achieve the goal.
“He has suffered from various complications related to an extended ICU stay, and we need more funds to pay for his continued hospital stay until his lungs can cope without the ventilator. We will use the funds raised to pay the hospital bills, to allow Dr. Sindi a chance to survive. “
Van Zyl said that the cost of being alone in the ICU is up to 200,000 rand per week, and that more than 1.5 million rand is already being paid to cover other costs.
The donated funds will go through the Van Zyl family trust called Khaya.
At the time of this writing, more than R520,000 had been raised towards the goal of R2 million.
