JOHANNESBURG – President Cyril Ramaphosa predicted another difficult and challenging year for South Africa in 2021.
In his New Years message on Thursday, the president said significant progress had been made in vital economic reforms and that this would ensure affordable energy, cheaper and faster broadband, and more competitive railroads and ports of entry.
He added that 2021 marks the long-awaited start of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which could put Africa on a more virtuous economic path.
Similarly, he expressed so much hope for his country, saying that the new year begins as South Africa prepares to rebuild its economy.
“We are embarking on an ambitious recovery plan,” he said, adding that the government is accelerating land redistribution, creating public employment opportunities and allowing more black people, women and youth to participate and benefit from it.
Ramaphosa said that this will be achieved through various partnerships.
He went on to say that the disruption brought on by COVID-19 must still come first as the country continues to work, learn, trade and socialize in new ways.
