Durban: The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in South Africa increased to 6,783.
On Sunday, national health minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize said the number increased by 447 with eight more deaths reported, bringing the number of people killed by the coronavirus in SA to 131.
“Unfortunately, we report eight other Covid-19 related deaths: 2 from the Western Cape, 4 from the Eastern Cape and 2 from Gauteng. This brings the total deaths to 131. We wish to express our condolences to the families of the deceased and greet the healthcare workers who treated the deceased patients, “Mkhize said.
“We also wish to indicate that as of April 30, 2020, 7 216 777 citizens have been screened and 72 087 of that Community Assessment Program have been referred for testing. We thank all of these compatriots for their solidarity with the program and for allowing our health care workers the privacy of their homes, “he said.
The Ministry of Health has also noted that more than 2,500 people recovered from the coronavirus.
On Friday, SA’s lockdown level dropped to level 4, meaning 1.5 million people are expected to resume work on Monday. Companies have been urged to ensure that they have taken the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of workers.
Employment and Labor Minister Thulas Nxesi said bUsers must have a clear plan for how they will protect the health and safety of everyone in their workplace.
Worldwide, more than 3.4 million tested positive for Covid-19 with 244 reported deaths. More than 1 million people have also recovered from the coronavirus.
