Johannesburg – South African confirmed cases of Covid-19 have increased to 4 793 with three more deaths, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said Monday.

Meanwhile, 217 Cuban health workers landed in the country in the early hours of Monday morning. They are expected to be in the country for at least a year.
Mkhize said they had been brought in to assist the country in its response to the Covid-19 virus.
He said that Cuban professionals included specialists in the areas of family medicine, infection prevention control, case management, regulatory authority, epidemiology and surveillance, health technology and biostatistics.
Mkhize said that disaster preparedness in Cuba and its consistent deployment of medical brigades for disaster relief where needed, continues to win Havana’s goodwill around the world.
“Like South Africa, we have taken an additional step that is in line with our closure regulations. This team will be placed in preventive quarantine while awaiting the results of their tests. We will also use this period to fully induce them to the South African situation analysis and the various provinces in which they will be deployed, ”said the minister.
Mkhize said that health workers would be sent to the provinces once they were quarantined.
“We have no doubt that our public health facilities will benefit from this generous and selfless gesture of our Cuban brothers,” he said.
Globally, the coronavirus has infected more than 3 million people and claimed 207,000 lives worldwide. Recoveries worldwide exceed 880,000.
