• Lewis Hamilton received two five-second penalties during the Russian Grand Prix.

• The Mercedes driver finished third in the race behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and his teammate Valtteri Bottas.

• Hamilton also received two penalty points in his super license, which have now been canceled.

Stewards at the Russian Grand Prix on Sunday night canceled the two penalty points imposed on Lewis Hamilton’s super license and instead fined his Mercedes team.

The six-time champion had received the two penalties and two five-second penalties after making irregular starts in pre-race practice at the pit lane exit.

In a statement, the sport’s governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), said they had been told the team had instructed Hamilton to start practice in the wrong place.

“The stewards received information from the team that the driver of car 44 [Hamilton] he had received an instruction from the team to take the practice outing in the wrong place, “he said.

“This was confirmed by the stewards after listening to the audio between the team and the driver.”

He added that the stewards “eliminate the penalty points imposed and fine the competitor (Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team) with € 25,000.”

The commissioners added that they were fining Mercedes 25,000 euros or 29,000 dollars for each violation.

Hamilton, who was aiming to match Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 Grand Prix wins, finished third in a race won by his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in second place.
