Durban – Billionaire businessman Johann Rupert reportedly gave President Cyril Ramaphosa a marching order, instructing him to tow the line and fire Ace Magashule, secretary general of the African National Congress (ANC).
According to a high-ranking source within the Ramaphosa camp who spoke to the Daily News, Rupert allegedly summoned Ramaphosa, former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas, and Old Mutual President Trevor Manuel, and told them that if Magashule is not removed this week by the ANC National Executive Committee, support for Ramaphosa and ANC funding will stop immediately.
He is reported to have vowed to end the media campaign in favor of ‘CR17’ if no steps are taken to deal with the party’s general secretary and his supporters.
Apparently Magashule is not the only target in the line of fire. Those identified as the ‘fighting’ faction and sympathizers of former President Jacob Zuma are expected to be treated and expelled from the ANC.
“Rupert is clear that if Magashule does not go, CR will no longer have the support of Rupert and his associates. The president has no choice but to fire Ace and his RET forces,” the source said.
The very tense instructions allegedly added that it was time to clean up the ANC and ‘bury’ supporters of Radical Economic Transformation (RET) once and for all.
The source said it was a “confrontation and a fight for South Africa’s resources.”
He added that RET has become a thorn in the side of Ramaphosa and those who financed his 1 billion rand presidential campaign, because RET continues to oppose Ramaphosa’s unfavorable policies and its privatization of state-owned enterprises (SOE).
“RET is a nuisance to both Ramaphosa and his manipulators. They supported him so that he could look out for their interests and now they feel that he is not complying. RET’s economic policies are not favorable to Ramaphosa and his business partners. His constant call to the Economic emancipation is irrational for the people of Ramaphosa. “
Among other orders allegedly made by Rupert, he is said to have demanded that Ramaphosa call his party members to order and stop confusing people with his anti-progressive policies.
“He has not only threatened to withdraw his financial backing for the ANC, he also said that he would ensure that the media stops writing positively about the president and those close to him,” the source said.
The ANC is supposedly divided along the lines of those of Rupert and those of the people of South Africa. Some within the party feel that the ANC has become a puppet of “white monopoly capital.”
“We have lost the ANC for those who refuse to transform this country. We are no longer in control while they make the decisions. White monopoly capital has taken over,” the source said.
In 2017, Rupert publicly showed his disapproval of RET, saying that Radical Economic Transformation was nothing more than “a keyword for theft.”
Rupert has publicly acknowledged Ramaphosa and has said that he has known President Cyril Ramaphosa since the early 1990s and that they formed a good relationship in 1994 and 1995.
The wealthy businessman also reportedly contributed to the ouster of former President Jacob Zuma, who was forced to leave office.
