Rugby bosses explore every avenue to play again

Rugby bosses around the world are searching for the best and safest ways to replay, but no one can say what that means for the immediate future of the game.

In the south, the Super Rugby season is off, while in the north there is hope of completing the club and Six Nations season.

Rugby wants to start again when it’s safe

Scottish Rugby COO Dominic McKay said talks were ongoing and that the situation around the return to play was fluid.

McKay said a massive calendar restructuring could be in the cards.

“I suppose everyone is seeing different ways of when rugby can restart, and doing it in a way that triggers competition,” McKay told Planet Rugby.

“Everyone recognizes that the November series includes teams from the southern hemisphere, it may not be practical for those teams to travel, so there is a clear uncertainty about it.”

“We have been looking at a number of different scenarios regarding those fall test windows.

“Until such time as we are told otherwise, we hope to have New Zealand, Argentina and Japan in November. But it would be a mistake on our part not to consider other options, and that is what we are doing right now. Everything is spoken as often in rugby, but we are not yet close to a firm solution.

“The priority is to work with the government and try to do as appropriate as possible.

“Right now, we are not looking too far, we are seeing when we can train our players? When can we give advice to local rugby clubs on the safety that they can resume training?

“So I guess, at the national level, every organization and every governing body is working with their government to do what’s appropriate for them. No one can look too far into the future right now. “

McKay said they hoped to complete the Pro14 season, but that they would have to shorten the campaign and could not include South African participants, the Kings and Cheetahs.

“We are still looking at scenarios that could see some way to potentially end the PRO14 season if restrictions allow it later in the late summer / early fall,” McKay said.

“And that will definitely be a reduced ending for the PRO14 season.

“We are still analyzing scenarios, the PRO14 executive will present us with an update on what could be possible.

“But that depends entirely on the various restrictions in the different territories.”
