Power company Eskom said late Friday that stage 2 load shedding would be implemented from 6 am to 11 pm on Saturday.
The rotational power outages would continue on Sunday, although the stage has yet to be confirmed, with the “system severely restricted.”
“Eskom needs to implement this load reduction to replenish depleted emergency reserves by next week,” the statement read.
Eskom said the reason for the reduction in load was due to “unforeseen breakdowns” of aging and unreliable plants.
“In addition to this, Eskom has disconnected two generating units at the Kendal power plant in accordance with environmental legislation. Similarly, four generating units at the Camden power plant were shut down to preserve the integrity of the ash dam facility, ”the statement read.
Eskom said 7,452MW of power had been lost due to planned maintenance, while another 10,208MW of capacity was unavailable due to “unplanned maintenance”.
“Eskom teams are working around the clock to bring as many of these units back into service as soon as possible,” the statement read.
