Bayern Munich hitman Robert Lewandowski recalled a long conversation he had with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
The Polish international played with Klopp during his four years at Borussia Dortmund, whom he left in the summer of 2014 to join the defending German champions.
Life at the Westfalenstadion was not always easy for Lewandowski, who struggled to stay fit during his first outings with the Bundesliga team.
His luck, however, began to change after a long and frank chat with the charismatic and motivating Klopp.
“The first three months in Dortmund were difficult,” Lewandowski recalled of his time with Dortmund during an interview with objective . “But I still know exactly when the situation improved.
“We lost an away game in the Champions League in Marseille. At the time, I really didn’t know what my position was with the coach.
“After the game, I spoke to Jurgen Klopp and asked him openly what he expected of me. We talked for almost two hours.
“I told him what I had in mind and he explained what he expected of me.

It has been an extremely interesting start to the season for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
The title defense got off to a shaky start when they overcame a seven-goal thriller against Leeds, before going on to seven conceded in a beating of Aston Villa.
Virgil van Dijk’s season ended with injury in a 2-2 draw at Everton, leaving the title favorites much less secure in the back, especially with Alisson’s concern about injury.
But there is no slowdown in what will be a busy season, with Klopp making sure his men keep up with him as they fight for more titles.

“After this conversation, everything worked out better. We won the next game 4-0 against Augsburg, I scored a hat-trick and got an assist.”
Lewandowski holds his former coach in high regard, and two years ago said: “He was a coach who also had a great influence on my career and I can only be grateful to him.
“What we did together in Dortmund and the progress we made has led us to where we are.
“I am delighted to have been able to meet a coach and a person like Jürgen because he is incredible, both as a coach and as a person. I learned a lot from him and that means a lot.”
Lewandowski and his Bayern Munich teammates will be back in action on Saturday of the week to welcome Werder Bremen at the Allianz Arena.
Klopp’s Liverpool, meanwhile, will return to the pitch for a week on Saturday, welcoming Leicester City to Anfield.
