Durban – The father of Durban community activist Rivaaj Ramdass, who died from complications from Covid-19, said he couldn’t believe his son was not coming home.

The 45-year-old man died of a massive heart attack at a hospital in the Midlands on Wednesday morning.

Ramdass’ elderly father Satish said the family was devastated by the loss, then described his son as the most charismatic and caring person.

“I lost Rivaaj to the community a long time ago,” Satish said.

Ramdass was a member of the tactical firing team and founder of the security team’s WhatsApp group.

“Rivaaj was the type of person who was willing to help anyone. Recently, someone called him in the middle of the night to tell him that his father had been kidnapped.

“Rivaaj went out and found the 76-year-old man in a bush, and then he tracked his car to Chesterville.”

“His passion was helping people. He didn’t care if he knew you or not. “

His brother said that the most suitable description for Rivaaj was: “Service to humanity is service to God.”

Ramdass tested positive a week ago.

“He drove to the hospital and insisted on doing it, because he didn’t want to infect anyone.

“He was in the general ward for a few days before being transferred to intensive care. I really don’t know what happened because yesterday we were told that her breathing was good. Then this morning he suffered a massive heart attack. ”

Satish said the funeral will take place tonight at the Clare Estate Crematorium.

Ramdass, who had a law degree, was also editor of the Umvoti Light newspaper on the north coast of KZN.

Prem Balram, Director of the South African Reaction Unit and friend of Ramdass, said: “Rivaaj will be remembered for selflessly giving to the community, a hero to many and a loss to those in need.”

Messages of condolence have been reaching social media.

On the Durban Muslim Facebook page, they wrote:

This morning we noted the passing of Rivaaj Ramdas, who is well known in the Durban community as a humanitarian.

Although not born into Islam, Mr. Ramdas played an important role in removing the ban on Azaan in Isipingo Beach.

We recognize him for his respect for other religions and offer our condolences to his family and loved ones.
