JOHANNESBURG – Former Chief of Criminal Intelligence Richard Mdluli failed to appear before the Pretoria Special Crimes Court on Tuesday due to poor health.

Mdluli is currently serving five years in prison for a kidnapping and assault case.

His co-defendants, Heine Barnard and Solomon Lazarus, briefly appeared in court and the case was postponed to February 8, 2021 and referred to the Pretoria High Court.

“They are accused of corruption, fraud and theft. Heine faces an additional charge of thwarting the ends of justice, ”Sindisiwe Twala, spokesperson for the NPA Investigations Directorate, said in a statement.

The charges included allegations of payment of the bribery fund for private travel to China and Singapore and private use of witness protection houses.

The Investigations Directorate said it was ready to go to trial and finally resolve the nine-year-old court case, which it inherited in 2019.
