DURBAN – Former criminal intelligence chief Richard Mdluli has again not appeared in court, apparently for medical reasons.

He was due to appear in court for his alleged role in a corruption of illicit funds case.

Investigations Directorate spokesman Sindisiwe Twala said the court was told that Mdluli was unwell.

“The medical reason was made known to the judge. However, we were not aware,” he said.

Twala said the matter had been postponed until February 19 for a pre-trial conference, while the defendants are expected to return to court on March 4.

In November last year, Mdluli also did not appear in court citing health problems as the reason for his absence.

Mdluli, who is serving a prison sentence for kidnapping and assaulting Oupa Ramogibe in 1998, is charged along with Heine Bernard and Solomon Lazarus.

The trio face charges of corruption, fraud and theft, while Barnard will face an additional charge of defeating the purposes of justice for allegations of abuse of the secret services bribery fund.

“This includes allegations of payment of the fund for private travel to China and Singapore, private use of witness protection houses, conversion of this property for personal use and leasing of his private residence to the state to pay the bail of Mdluli, among others. “Twala said.
