Bahrain – Daniel Ricciardo criticized “Hollywood” coverage of Romain Grosjean’s fierce Bahrain Grand Prix crash on Sunday, saying he disliked Formula One showing endless repeats as the drivers waited for the race to restart.

Grosjean was lucky to escape alive after his Haas car smashed through metal barriers, split in two and burst into flames.

“I’m upset and disappointed in Formula One for showing or choosing how to show it like they did, and broadcasting replay after replay after replay of the fire, and his car was split in half,” Renault’s Ricciardo said.

“And then, as if that wasn’t enough, they go on board,” added the Australian.

“Why do we need to see this? We will compete again in an hour. His family has to keep watching that. All of our families have to keep watching that … It’s really unfair. It’s not entertainment.”

Ricciardo said that Formula One, whose commercial rights are owned by US-based Liberty Media, was lucky not to have to deal with a very different story.

“Showing it like it’s something from Hollywood is not right. Choose to do it tomorrow, but not today,” added the Renault driver.

When asked to comment, a Formula One spokesperson pointed to established procedures and protocols whereby reruns of any serious accident are performed only after race control has confirmed the driver is safe.

If that’s not the case, nothing is displayed.

Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes agreed that the replays had been unnerving.

“I feel like people, viewers want to see it. But there is also a limit,” said the Finn. “It could have been a different fraction, the bypass, and there would have been no way for him to get out of the car.”

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said the images were terrifying, but “if you are not transparent as an organization, you are simply running the risk of someone else showing things that are out of your control.”

The race at Sakhir was stopped and delayed for an hour and 20 minutes after the accident on the first lap and the track workers had to remove the metal barrier and replace it.

Haas said Grosjean remained in the hospital overnight after sustaining burns to the back of his hands.
