Durban – Hundreds of people gathered outside the main gate of the Engen refinery on Tara Road, Wentworth, on Wednesday morning to demand that the plant be closed and that the needs of the neighboring community be taken seriously.
Community activist and director of the South Durban Community Environment Alliance, Desmond D’Sa, said the community had had enough.
He said that during several community consultations they had come up with an action plan that would cause local minibus taxi associations to refuse to fill gasoline at Engen workshops.
“If you don’t listen today, we are already consulting with the legal teams. We have been in contact with taxi associations and have called for a boycott of Engen gas stations, ”he said.
D’Sa added that this was just the beginning of massive action by residents.
“People are angry. The refinery doesn’t give a damn about them, ”he said.
The protest comes just days after a massive explosion rocked the southern Durban community on Friday.
Shortly after 7 a.m., there was reportedly a massive explosion at the plant. At least seven people were injured in the blast. In a flat not far from the refinery, a family was evacuated after their flat caught fire.
Families affected by the Plain Fire stayed at B & Bs in the Bluff.
