PRETORIA – The midsize kid-sized Range Rover, also known as the Velar, has been refreshed for 2021 and while it doesn’t look much different than the current model, it inherits some of the new engines and cabin tech that were recently announced at other Land Rover models.
The upgraded Range Rover Velar will hit South African shores during the first half of 2021, offering a choice between two new 3-liter inline six-cylinder turbocharged Ingenium engines: a P340 petrol and a P300 diesel.
The petrol model P300 is rated at 250 kW and 480 Nm, while the D300 delivers 221 kW and 650 Nm, and Land Rover claims 0-100 km / h acceleration times of 6.3 and 6.5 seconds, respectively. Both models ship as standard with four-wheel drive and air suspension.
The company has also announced a new P400e plug-in hybrid for select international markets. Here we see a 221kW 2-liter turbo petrol engine paired with a 76kW electric motor, while a 17.1kWh lithium-ion battery has been installed, to allow a range of up to 53km between charges.
While the basic cabin design remains as before, save for a new ‘smart button’ steering wheel and redesigned drive selector, functionality has been enhanced with Land Rover introducing the new generation Pivi and Pivi Pro systems, which feature graphics. crisp new and super-responsive.
Velar owners can access software updates ‘over the air’, with an integrated data connection giving them access to the latest maps, applications and vehicle software modules. Also, Bluetooth has been updated to allow two phones to pair at the same time.
The improved Velar also promises a quieter ride, thanks to the equipping of an active road noise cancellation system. The effect is subtle, but Land Rover promises a minimum reduction of 4 decibels.
Available devices include the second generation activity key, with the shock and water resistant wrist device now incorporating an LCD watch.
South African pricing and specs will be released closer to launch, which is scheduled for the first half of 2021.
