‘Rainy and stormy’ weather to hit Gauteng – The Citizen

After Sunday’s “beast of a storm” that hit Gauteng, more weather alerts have been issued proactively.

According to Gauteng Weather, initial forecasts suggest a high probability of heavy rain and flooding in parts of the province on Thursday.

This was confirmed by the South African Meteorological Service (SAWS) on Tuesday, which said it was due to a low-altitude air cut located west of the Northern Cape.

This results in cooler air, humidity and “significant instability”, which SAWS says is expected to be the “main driver of a bout of rains and storms across much of South Africa in the coming days.”

The system is expected to reach the western parts of the country on Wednesday night, and widespread torrential rains are forecast to follow, except in the southwestern region of the Western Cape, where dry conditions are said to persist.

The Northwest, Free State, Eastern Cape and Gauteng are expected to be the hardest hit by the anticipated storms.

Temperatures are expected to drop to a maximum of only 19 ° C in Johannesburg on Thursday.

As with any forecast of heavy rain, the threat of localized flooding looms.

SAWS warned that some of the forecast storms could become severe, accompanied by hail and winds.

On Wednesday, a level 1 yellow alert for severe storms was issued for the western parts of the Northwest, parts of the North Cape and western parts of the Free State.

Wind gusts are expected to hit parts of the Free State, the Northwest and Gauteng, as well as parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

Sunny weather is expected to continue in the western and northern Cape on Thursday, as the weather will clear somewhat in parts of the northwest and the free state.

But rain and storms are said to persist in Gauteng on Friday, and the weekend forecast will be no rain.

The Western Cape can see almost gale force winds, and maritime communities are urged to prepare for rough seas.

A maximum of 23° C and a minimum of 14° C is forecast for Wednesday in Johannesburg. The expected maximum temperature in Pretoria for Wednesday is 24 ° C, with a minimum of 16 ° C.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to travel with caution.
