A rafting excursion ended in tragedy at the weekend when a river guide was killed while on a rowing excursion down the Storms River in the Eastern Cape.
The National Maritime Rescue Institute (NSRI) said the incident occurred Saturday night, but officials were only able to recover the body of the 31-year-old guide on Sunday.
The recovery was carried out by the police diving unit, SANParks rangers, and government forensic pathology officials.
“On Saturday afternoon, NSRI Plettenberg Bay’s watch crew and police had responded to the mouth of the Storms River after nine people, two river guides and seven guests, were reported late from a raft rowing by the River Storms, “said NSRI Oyster Bay station commander Lodewyk van Rensburg.
When the group arrived at the meeting place, there were only eight people on the rafts.
“They reported that one of the river guides had fallen into the water upstream and was recovered by the group, who carried out resuscitation efforts in man, but he was not revived, ”said Van Rensburg.
He said the group had left his body upstream.
“An operation was carried out to recover his body since dawn Sunday morning,” Van Rensburg said.
The body was recovered and placed in the care of forensic pathology services.
The police have opened an investigation file.
NSRI conveyed its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
