Argentina will assume Australia in Newcastle on Saturday with the winner of the clash moving to the top of the Tri Nations record ahead of the mighty All Blacks.
It’s a rare scenario made possible because the All Blacks lost back-to-back games in the tournament, falling 24-22 to the Wallabies before being surprised by the Pumas losing 25-15 last weekend.
It was the first time the All Blacks lost to Argentina and it was a result that created a media storm in New Zealand.
For Argentina, however, it was one of the great days in their rugby history, made all the more special by the fact that they had arrived cold at the tournament without having played since the 2019 Rugby World Cup as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Now that the focus is on Saturday’s game against the Wallabies, what are the chances of another upset for the men in blue and white?
According to the South African sportsbooks Sportingbet, the Wallabies enter the game as 57/100 favorites to win the contest while Argentina is 137/100 outsiders.
Bookmakers have also given the Wallabies a four points handicap, which suggests that it will be a very close game.
With the victory, Argentina will be well positioned to make a play and win its first Rugby Championship / Tri Nations title.
Australia, meanwhile, has won the tournament four times.
