JOHANNESBURG – The Premier Soccer League (PSL) announced on Thursday that DStv would be the main sponsor of South African flying soccer starting in October.
The deal would last five years and see the league referred to the DStv Premiership.
The media company replaced Absa as main sponsors after the banking giant’s contract ended in June.
Details about the prize money and the exact day in October that the season would resume were expected to be decided at an emergency meeting Tuesday.
“As PSL continues to innovate in its quest to improve its product, it will have the full support of DStv, whose offering requires a great deal of local content,” PSL President Irvin Khoza said in a statement.
“There is no ‘them and us’. We are united at the hip to produce more consumption of the best product for our deserving supporters. This membership is special because it is the only membership that is as attractive to the young as to the old.
MultiChoice Group Executive Director Calvo Mawela said: “Through the DStv Premiership, we are expanding the reach of football more and more in partnership with PSL. This league is for all South Africans and all communities represented in our uniquely diverse nation.
“With more televised games than ever, we are deliberately creating a space for all South Africans to call this competition their own.”
