DualSense is the name of the new PS5 controller that will ship with PlayStation 5 later this year. The DualSense sports not only completely new functionality and a host of new features, but also a whole new look to match. A PlayStation blog post detailing the new DualSense controller notes the design decision to keep “much of what gamers love about DualShock 4 intact,” but despite clinging to some of the most iconic qualities of the Old controller, the DualSense has a lot of new features to bring to the next generation of PlayStation too.
Here’s a quick summary of what’s new with DualSense:
- Two-tone color design
- Form factor
- Light bar placement
- Haptic feedback
- Adaptive triggers
- Rechargeable battery via USB-C
- Built-in microphone
- Create button
Let’s take a look at what each change means to the new PS5 controller and what else we know about the DualSense, so far. If you’re wondering when you can pre-order the PS5, the answer is not yet, but you can subscribe to receive pre-order notifications now.
Two-tone color design and light bar placement
The most notable difference between the DualSense and previous DualShock controllers is its striking two-tone design. The location of the lightbar has also changed: instead of being on top of the controller, it will now be located on both sides of the touchpad. This, according to Sony, will give it “a slightly bigger look and feel.”
New form factor
The new DualSense controller appears to have a slightly thicker form factor than the DualShock 4. While we don’t have the exact measurements and haven’t had one in our hands yet, the shape is definitely a divergence from previous PlayStation controllers. According to Sony, the angle of the manual triggers and the grip have been updated to make room for some of its new features, such as the introduction of adaptive triggers.
Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers
One of the first things we knew about the new PS5 controller is that it would use haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. That is still true, as Sony had previously announced. In its blog post, Sony detailed the “variety of powerful sensations” that haptic feedback can bring to the game, such as “the slowness of driving a car through the mud.” Haptic feedback is the same technology behind Nintendo Switch’s HD din, and we know the Xbox Series X controller will use it, too. (See our comparison of the PS5 and Xbox Series X controllers.)
Adaptive triggers on the L2 and R2 buttons will introduce different levels of “resistance” with trigger presses, which can work in conjunction with the DualSense’s haptic feedback to make gaming interactions more immersive. According to Sony, adaptive triggers make it so “you can really feel the strain of your actions, like when you draw an arc to shoot an arrow.”
Rechargeable battery
DualSense uses a rechargeable battery, just like previous DualShock controllers. This may not be the most exciting news, until you meet the next new feature, which is …
USB-C port
That’s right: the DualSense controller will feature a USB-C port for its power cable. Good news for you, bad news for your dusty old micro USB cables.
Built-in microphone
DualSense will include a built-in microphone for chatting with friends without the need for a headset, although Sony still recommends using one for longer chat sessions.
Create button
The Share button has been replaced by a new Create button, although Sony declined to share more details about how the new button differs from the Share functionality. It simply says, “Once again, we are pioneering new ways for players to create epic game content to share with the world, or simply to enjoy for themselves.” More details on that are said to be approaching launch.
…And more?
We will continue to update this story as we learn more about the new PS5 controller. For now, this is what Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan said about DualSense.
“DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures how strongly we feel about taking a generational leap with PS5,” said Ryan. “The new controller, along with the many innovative features on PS5, will be transformative for gaming, continuing our mission on PlayStation to push the boundaries of the game, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I really want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward the launch of PS5 at Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the design of the console, in the coming months. “
