Tent set up on Baden Powell Drive, Cape Town, by protesters.
- Protesters have erected a marquee on both sides of Cape Town’s busy Baden Powell Drive ahead of peak traffic.
- The marquee blocked traffic between Japhta K Masemola and Walter Sisulu Drive with a ripple effect on the surrounding access roads.
- A barricade of burning tires had also been lit nearby.
Protesters erected a marquee over Cape Town’s busy Baden Powell Drive, sparking a stir before rush hour on Friday.
The reason for the protest is not yet clear.
The city’s traffic officer, Richard Coleman, said the marquee on Baden Powell Drive blocked traffic to Khayelitsha.
“We ask motorists to please avoid that area,” he said.
Further on, on the Govan Mbeki road between the Duinefontein road and Edward Makele, tires caught on the road.

The eastbound Govan Mbeki Road was reopened at Duinefontein Road, but the westbound section was still closed in the early afternoon.
Community Security MMC JP Smith said police were about to take down the tent, but the protesters chose to do it themselves after a neighborhood councilor went to speak with them.
Police spokesman Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said the road was cleared after the protest and no one was arrested.
