The eNCA reports that a student was shot and injured in Braamfontein, but there has been no confirmation of this.

Students were protesting Monday in support of a nationwide lockdown called by the South African Student Union (SAUS).

A police helicopter was dispatched to Braamfontein to monitor protesting UJ and Wits students.

Some journalists said they had been harassed by the students, and an eNCA reporter said they pushed him.

Earlier, students warned eNCA journalists to leave.

“eNCA, we’re going to warn you now. We don’t want you here. We don’t want you to televise us.”

The rally comes after talks between SAUS and Deputy Minister of Higher Education Buti Manamela failed to reach an agreement on Saturday, prompting the union to call for a national shutdown.

They demand that the government eliminate historic debt and lower rates.
