The love of money is in fact the root of all evil.

A self-styled prophet lived true to this Bible verse after breaking into his client’s home and stealing money.

The self-proclaimed prophet was convicted of robbery yesterday after he allegedly broke into his client’s home and stole US $ 7,400 and R4,600.

The prophet will be sentenced today.

Steven Mururi (34), who pleaded not guilty to the charges, was convicted by Harare magistrate Ms. Victoria Mashamba after a full trial that ruled that the State had proven his case.

In his defense, Mururi told the court that he never went to the anonymous client’s home alone, much less stole the money.

The court heard that on June 10 of this year, Prophet Mururi entered his client’s room at 55 Buggard Road in Borrowdale, Harare, using a duplicate key and stole property.

Ms. Mashamba deferred the matter until today for sentencing, The Herald reports.

Unfortunately for the prophet, all of his movements were seen by two eyewitnesses, Brian Mapuranga and Ellena Sapuhana.

Eyewitnesses testified under oath that they had seen him carry a black and orange wallet into the courtyard and use a duplicate key to enter the client’s room before he left 30 minutes later.

Witnesses said the prophet closed the door before disappearing with his loot.

To his undoing, the prophet Mururi went to a car sale the same day with the same wallet and bought a Honda Fit, with the cash in the same denominations as the stolen money.

An informal identification parade was held and witnesses positively identified Prophet Mururi.
