Professional sport in South Africa will be allowed to continue during the recently imposed Level 3 national lockdown.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Monday night that, in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus, the country would enter into a tight set of regulations.
However, the good news is that professional sport is allowed to continue as long as the venues, teams and players involved comply with strict security measures.
It means that South Africa’s ongoing cricket test series against Sri Lanka, the Rugby Currie Cup and the Premier Soccer League will likely continue.
However, with the new national curfew at 9pm, all venues that host sports will have to close by 8pm on any night.
It means that the starting times, particularly in the Currie Cup and in the PSL, will have to be changed in several cases.
SA Rugby has already confirmed that this weekend’s clash between the Free State Cheetahs and Western Province in Bloemfontein, originally scheduled for 7:00 pm, will now begin at 4:30 pm.
“The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture confirmed on Tuesday that professional sports can continue, although all games must conclude before 8:00 p.m. in compliance with the national curfew of 9:00 p.m. release.
The PSL, for its part, has a match that starts at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday that will have to be rescheduled while, next week, there is a full round of matches during the week that also has matches starting at 7 : 00 hours.
