PRO14 organizers confirmed Wednesday they were in talks with SA Rugby regarding the possibility of incorporating more South African teams into the competition.
Recent media reports indicated that the tournament could be expanded to 16 teams, with the participation of four South African franchises.
South Africa is currently guaranteed two franchises, but PRO14 organizers admitted that it could expand in the near future.
A statement on the official PRO14 website read: “SA Rugby’s long-standing commitments are to place two teams in PRO14 and in light of the withdrawal of the Southern Kings, they are discussing compliance with this agreement starting in 2021 using a replacement team from their franchises. current professionals.
“In addition, both PRO14 Rugby and SA Rugby are in initial discussions regarding the possible expansion of the tournament and deepening our partnership to include more South African franchises from 2021.”
The Cheetahs and Southern Kings were the two PRO14 teams from South Africa, but SA Rugby is believed to have been eager to present its four Super Rugby sides, the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers, in an expanded PRO16.
The Kings will not participate in the 2020 season due to financial difficulties, while Griquas and Pumas will join the other franchises in a seven-team Super Rugby Unlocked and Currie Cup double round.
