A host of jaw-dropping new revelations were made regarding the stormy marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana during the new season of The crown.
One conclusion of the Netflix original had been the Prince of Wales’ uncomfortable feelings towards his wife’s growing popularity, while her prominence took a back seat.
Looking back at the late royalty’s real view of her husband’s feelings about her taking the limelight from him, Diana admitted that the public’s admiration for her had been a major cause of their crumbling marriage.
In the explosive and infamous Panorama interview with BBC’s Martin Bashir, Diana had confessed: “The pressure on the two as a media couple was phenomenal, and a lot of people misunderstood it.”
“We were taking a tour of Australia, for example, and all you could hear was, ‘Oh, she’s on the other side,'” she said, explaining how Charles being on her side would be a disappointment to the frantic crowd.
“They weren’t on the right side to greet me or touch me,” he said.
“Now if you are a man like my husband, a proud man, that matters to you if you listen to it every day for four weeks. And you feel bad about it, instead of feeling happy and sharing it,” he continued.
Bashir asked Diana, “So they expressed a preference even then for you instead of your husband?”
“Yes, with which I felt very uncomfortable, and I felt that it was unfair, because I wanted to share,” she replied.
“With the media attention came a lot of jealousy; That is why many complicated situations arose ”, he added.
