It is almost certain that Google will launch the Pixel 4a sometime in the next few weeks (probably in May, when Google I / O will take place), and as its launch approaches, there really is very little about this budget phone. I do not know yet. But if you’re looking to catch up on the latest information on Google’s successor to the popular Pixel 3a, we’ve put together all the relevant, credible and interesting information that has leaked about the 4a to date. As usual, Google really didn’t manage to keep almost anything about this phone a secret, and it looks like it will stick largely to the formula that made its predecessor so loved by critics and consumers alike.
What will it look like?
Among CAD-based renders, in-person photos, and videos, we have a pretty good idea of what to physically expect from the Pixel 4a.
Some people in Cuba even managed to get their hands on one for an early “review”, showing the phone from almost every angle and giving us a glimpse of the software’s experience and camera (presumably pre-production):
Physically, it looks something like a child of love between the current Pixel 3a and Google’s recent Pixel 4, featuring what looks like a fully plastic curved unibody and a Pixel 4-style square camera bump, which still seems to house just one. single camera.
The bezels are about to disappear when the phone takes an almost edge-to-edge screen, sporting one of those novel “punch” or “pinhole” designs, with a front camera embedded just below the screen in the upper left corner corner. .
A rear-mounted fingerprint sensor sits around the back, which, along with the front bezels, indicates that there is no secure infrared camera-based face unlock (as with the Pixel 4).
We’ve seen leaks showing the phone in the usual black and white colors, and we hope the joker is a light blue shade of some sort (according to YouTuber Dave Lee).
Measurements for the Pixel 4a have a speed of 144.2 x 69.5 x 8.2mm (9mm at camera bump), which is slightly smaller than the Pixel 3a. The dimensions regarding a larger XL variant have not been leaked, and we’re pretty sure right now that there won’t be one (more on that later).
A phone or two?
Only one. David Lee states that we will only get one size for the Pixel 4a. Corroborating that, only one device codename (sunfish) has been conclusively linked to the Pixel 4a, and it’s also the only name that appeared more recently in a dismantling of the camera app.
At one point, 9to5Google had its own sources claiming that a larger 4a XL was still being worked on, but if it existed, it was probably scrapped. 9to5Google also located this image of what is likely to be the back of a 4a XL that appeared on eBay.
Still, despite this, we are pretty sure there will only be one size for the Pixel 4a.
What are the specs?
At this point, we have a good idea of the hardware that will be included in the Pixel 4a. Between the known details related to the code name of the “moonfish” and the details obtained by the leak of the Cuban device, we can paint an almost complete image by the numbers.
More recently, 9to5Google got its own separate confirmation of the specs corroborating all previous leaks, which didn’t add much new information outside of the possibility of a larger 128GB storage size.
Although it was previously speculated that “redfin” or “bramble” could be different variants of the Pixel 4a, signs now point to it being the next Pixel 5, so we probably won’t see a version of the Pixel 4a with a Snapdragon 765.
What features will it lose against the Pixel 4?
We hope the Pixel 4a doesn’t have a dip-rated IP score (the Pixel 4 is IP68), wireless charging, secure face unlock, or a dedicated telephoto camera.
Will it have 5G?
No. The hardware name “sunfish”, which has been conclusively linked to the Pixel 4a, will specifically not support 5G given the chipset it uses.
Although previously we thought that two other hardware names (“redfin” and “bramble”) could be associated with the Pixel 4a series, and its details indicate that will be Supports a 5G compatible chipset: Since then we have come to believe that those two devices are actually the next Pixel 5.
