We have SA prices for the new BMW 4 Series.
The M440i xDrive tops the line-up before the arrival of the M4.
A look inside the cabin (with the steering wheel on the wrong side, anyway).
We’ve gotten our hands on local pricing for the new range of BMW 4 Series coupe, including the M440i xDrive variant. This is what it costs, South Africa.
Unveiled in June 2020, the new G22 generation 4 Series features the Munich-based firm’s controversial grille design. At launch, the local range will comprise three variants, with the new 4 Series Convertible and M4 to follow in 2021.
So how much are you looking at here? Well, we have taken a look at the price list (thanks to our friends at duoporta.com for tip) and I can tell you that the 420i will start in R762 438. Specify the M Sport kit and the price increases to R807 838. This variant uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol mill that sends 135 kW and 300 Nm to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission ( this gearbox is standard across the range), sufficient for a sprint to 100 km / h in 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 240 km / h.
Next up is the 420d, which uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel generating 140 kW and 400 Nm. R807 316 In standard version and R852 716 in M Sport form, the oil coupe will reach three figures in 7.2 seconds, before reaching 240 km / h.
And the M Performance variant? Well the M440i xDrive comes from R1 185 954, with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine delivering 275 kW and 500 Nm to all four wheels. That’s enough, says the Munich-based firm, for a sprint from zero to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 250 km / h.
As a reminder, BMW says that the second-generation 4 Series features a center of gravity about 21mm lower than that of the related 3-Series sedan, while the rear axle track is 23mm wider. At 4768mm nose to tail, the new 4 Series is 128mm longer than the original and 27mm wider. Meanwhile, its wheelbase has grown 41mm to 2851mm. BMW claims a luggage capacity of 440 liters, an increase of around 30 liters.
While the new 4 Series is equipped with custom-tuned “lift related” shocks fitted as standard, a firmer M sport suspension setup (as well as adaptive M suspension) is also offered. M sports brakes (with a choice of blue or red calipers) have also been added to the list of extras.
Inside, BMW’s latest coupe borrows bits from the 3 Series, including a 10.25-inch display and a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster. There are also newly developed sports seats.
