“One of the guys came up to the bar and was very persistent that he wanted us to serve them alcohol. We told him we didn’t have it and he agreed they would have an alcohol-free gin and tonic. He asked us to ‘do it right’ and we explained to him that all he was going to get was a non-alcoholic drink, “said Nolte.

Nolte said an employee who was in charge of the bar that day served a non-alcoholic drink and served the men, who were sitting outside.

“Then two plainclothes policemen entered. They did not sign our Covid record or take their temperature at the door. They came up to me and asked me where our liquor was, ”he said.

He claimed that officers insisted that he had served alcohol to the men outside and wanted to know where the stock was.

“I told him that our stocks were in the warehouse, locked up. He ran out, smelled and tasted the drink that our bartender had poured him and was convinced it was alcohol, ”said Nolte.

Pretorius was not in Gauteng at the time of the incident and had to speak to police and their staff by cell phone.

“My staff even showed the police the empty bottle of Soho non-alcoholic gin that was poured. They had none of that. They just wanted to know where our warehouse was, ”he said.

The officers, who introduced themselves as from the Johannesburg South Police Station, said they were confiscating all of his shares.

“I told my staff to take an inventory right away and help with an inventory list. They even helped load all the alcohol, worth about R112,000, onto the vehicles, “said Pretorius.

Nolte was then told that he would have to meet with the police at the Garsfontein Police Station to sign a declaration form.
