President Cyril Ramaphosa has criticized the poor state of local government in South Africa, saying that some municipalities face a credibility crisis with residents.

“Along with institutional weaknesses, such as corruption and nepotism, many of our municipalities face a credibility and credibility crisis from our people,” Ramaphosa said.

Ramaphosa addressed the inauguration of the national assembly of members of the Local Government Association of South Africa.

“We cannot have municipalities so dysfunctional that people feel that they must resort to violence to be heard. We simply cannot allow the local government to fail because when the local government fails, the provincial government fails and eventually the national government fails, it is too important to our people and their lives, ”he said.

Ramaphosa pointed to the poor results of the audits as one of the measures of failure in the local government.

“We must all admit that the local government, while it has done many things to benefit our people, also faces a number of very serious challenges. One measure of the scope of these challenges is the poor results of municipal audits, ”he said.
