  • The situation “is not good,” says his lawyer Danie Gouws.

The head of Nelson Mandela Bay’s infrastructure and engineering portfolio, Mongameli Bobani, is not in good condition after testing positive for Covid-19, according to his lawyer.

Danie Gouws told News24 that the former mayor felt ill during a council meeting last week on Friday.

“He thought his blood sugar was low and someone gave him a piece of candy. He went home and didn’t come back to work on Monday,” Gouws said.

Gouws said Bobani was admitted to St George Hospital on Tuesday.

He said that the UDM counselor’s condition had worsened and that he was short of breath.

A test was conducted, which came back positive on Wednesday.

Gouws said he communicated regularly with Bobani’s family.

“The family is in a state and his wife can’t see it for obvious reasons. It’s not good,” Gouws said.

According to Gouws, Bobani is receiving oxygen on a ventilator and is sedated.
