  • Western Cape Prime Minister Alan Winde wants the curfew lifted and a date for international travel to resume.
  • Prime ministers are to meet with President Ramaphosa and the NCCC to discuss the closure.
  • Winde also hopes to be clear about sporting events and businesses.

Western Cape Prime Minister Alan Winde and other Prime Ministers will meet with President Cyril Ramaphosa and the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) to discuss the next phase of the lockdown on Tuesday.

In a video statement released Tuesday, Winde said he would push for three main agenda items that his government believed would allow for increased economic activity in the country.

Winde said he will ask the president to lift the curfew and also clarify international travel.

“We need a date that opens international travel, in October, so that reservations can be made by international travelers who want to come to our country for business or vacations in the coming months,” he said.

“We need to make sure we open up to our events, sports businesses and churches need to be able to open up a greater load capacity,” Winde added.

Last week, Winde also pleaded with Ramaphosa to fight the “second pandemic,” unemployment, by opening up all sectors of the economy on Friday.

According to a statement from the presidency, the meeting would be chaired by Ramaphosa and was expected to focus on an NCCC report on the country’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This, as Ramaphosa hinted in a meeting with the South African National Editors Forum last week, that South Africa could soon enter a Level 1 lockdown.
