JOHANNESBURG – Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called on the government to delay the reopening of schools, scheduled for January 27, to avoid putting children’s lives at risk amid the coronavirus pandemic.
EFF leader Julius Malema gave the party’s first press conference on Thursday, highlighting the party’s concerns about how the government was dealing with the pandemic.
“We also call for the reopening of all schools to be postponed in light of the increase in new COVID-19 infections and the uncontrollable rate of COVID-19 related deaths.
“As EFF, we oppose the children’s game of life, a virus that all of humanity has not yet properly understood. It will be extremely painful when. Families start losing their children because as leaders we do not respect the situation to meet and preserve the future of our nation. “
Malema also called for the postponement of the local government elections, which will take place later this year, until 2024, which would be the first time that the elections in South Africa have been postponed.
“We reiterate our call for the consolidation of the electoral system in South Africa, for a series of elections in which local and national government elections are held at the same time.
“It becomes more important during this pandemic, where we find ourselves unable to hold free and fair elections objectively.
“As it stands, COVID-19 has made our lives unpredictable, a situation that undermines the ability of each and every political party to interact with voters, due to fear of participating in the massive spread of the virus. .
“We therefore call for all elections, by-elections and local government elections to be postponed until 2024, as the elections can be considered a wide-spread event.”
Malema also spoke out against closing land borders, calling it a waste of time and a way to please whites and Europeans by keeping international flights open.
