She said that in Soweto, the police seized liquor in at least 30 incidents in which people were drinking in public.
“More than 10 suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, other arrests were for drug possession, possession of allegedly stolen property, including a motor vehicle and a hijacked trailer.
Peters said a suspect at a roadblock in Fourways, north of Johannesburg, was arrested for possession of a firearm without a license.
“Nine businesses were closed in Tshwane after it was discovered that they were operating after the regulated curfew of 9:00 p.m., while three suspects were charged with illegally selling fireworks.”
He said four illegal firearms, four allegedly stolen vehicles and a hijacked trailer were also recovered during New Year’s Eve operations in Ekurhuleni.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Elias Mawela has praised the five district commissioners and the heads of other law enforcement agencies and private security partners for the integrated approach to fighting crime.
