Five people were arrested after they were caught loading 57 bags of dagga into a truck at the commercial premises in Mkondeni, Pietermaritzburg.
Police and security company officials who embarked on an intelligence-driven operation said the truck had been scheduled to travel to Cape Town on Saturday night.
Police said information was received that the illegal operation was taking place at a commercial location on Edison Road, and officers “were watching a truck that was used to transport the dagger.”
The police observed five suspects loading dagga into the truck and rushed to the premises. All five suspects, ages 21 to 45, were arrested, “said police spokesman Brig Jay Naicker.
Naicker said a total of 57 bags of dagga were seized, with each bag weighing between 30 and 40 kilograms. The street value of the dagga was estimated at R1.7m.
A dagga possession case was opened at the Alexandra Road Police Station for further investigation.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Khombinkosi Jula said more arrests were imminent.
“This arrest shows that we are approaching suspects who traffic drugs within our province. More arrests can be expected as operations are still ongoing, “said Jula.
The suspects were expected to appear in Pietermaritzburg magistrates court on Monday.
