HARARE – Zimbabwe police are asking for information Thursday to help them arrest suspects who escaped with $ 2.5 million from a truck in transit.

The robbery at a siding west of Harare is believed to be the largest in the country’s history.

In a country with a severe cash shortage and where people queue for days at banks, this is an exorbitant sum to lose.

Police say a truck of cash in transit was transporting 2.5 million dollars, more than 38 million rand, to Chinhoyi, northwest of Harare, on Wednesday afternoon.

The driver and his two companions carried six passengers. One drew a pistol and disarmed the drivers at a shelter near the Gwebi River. All seven cash boxes were loaded into a getaway car.

This robbery was even larger than in 2018, in which a gang robbed a Harare company about $ 1.8 million.
